A. Disk Contents
This disk contains the following software components:
StylusCOLOR driver:
Allows you to use the printer's built-in serial interface to connect the printer directly to the Macintosh.
EPSON Monitor2 utility:
Lets you manage print jobs that have been sent to the printer using background printing.
Bi-D Calibration Utility:
Lets you calibrate the printer so that vertical lines are aligned.
EPSON StatusMonitor:
Monitors the status of the printer. The paper monitor is not supported for this printer.
ColorSync 2.0 and Profiles:
Contains ColorSync 2.0 system files and profiles for this printer.
B. System Requirements
The Stylus COLOR 500 has built-in serial and parallel interfaces, so you can connect your printer to a Macintosh or a PC. You can even connect both simultaneously; the printer automatically switches between interfaces as it receives print data.
Before using your Stylus series printer with your Macintosh, make sure you have the following minimum system requirements:
-System 7.1 or later
-A minimum of 5MB of RAM
-Plenty of hard disk space to store and print color images. The amount you need depends on the number, resolution, and size of your color images
-A standard Apple System/Peripheral-8 cable.
C. Software Installation
Before you install the driver and utilities, make a backup copy of your disks. Then follow these steps:
1. Hold down the Shift key as you turn on your Macintosh to turn off its system extensions and virus protection programs.
2. Insert the Disk1 into a diskette drive. If the Disk1 screen does not appear, double-click the Disk1 icon.
3. Double-click the Installer icon. When you see the initial screen, click Continue.
4. The dialog box that appears allows you to install software in one of two ways:
- Serial Driver Package. Select this option to install all the software necessary for standalone use (serial connection), including the StylusCOLOR driver, EPSON Monitor2, Bi-D Calibration utility, EPSON StatusMonitor utility, ColorSync 2.0 system files and profiles.
- Individual software components. Select only those software components you want to install by clicking on the items.
5. Click Install to copy the selected software to your hard disk and follow the prompts on the screen to insert Disk2 and Disk1 as necessary.
6. When the installation is complete, click Restart to exit the Installer and restart your Macintosh.
7. Open the Chooser under the Apple menu and select the StylusCOLOR icon.
When you select the StylusCOLOR icon, you are prompted to confirm the printer or modem port to which you connected the printer. Make sure the printer is on and the interface cable is connected to one of the ports. Click the Confirm button to check the connection. If you want to change the port, click the Cancel button and click the appropriate icon.
8. You are prompted to confirm the printer model the driver has detected on the port. Click Confirm.
9. Turn off AppleTalk by clicking the Inactive radio button.
10. Turn on background printing so you can use the EPSON Monitor2 Utility.
11. Close the Chooser.
12. You see a reminder message to change the printer in your applications. Click OK.
This completes the installation and selection of the StylusCOLOR driver.
D. Accessing the Printer Driver
The printer driver settings are accessible from two dialog boxes: Print and Page Setup. Most settings are available from the Print dialog box; however, to change the paper size or define a new one, use the Page Setup dialog box.
To bring up the Print dialog box, choose Print from the File menu of your software program. Then choose the Option button. This opens a dialog box that contains the settings that control the printer driver.
IMPORTANT: The driver settings are not saved from one application to the next. However, the settings are saved with each document and are restored when you reload the document. Whenever you exit one application and start up a new one, check that the printer settings are still appropriate. For example, if you choose special coated paper in one application, you will need to re-select it if you exit the application and bring up a new application.

The printer driver has the following default settings:
Inks - Color (CMYK)
Method - Automatic
Resolution - Best -360 dpi
Intensity - Medium
Paper Type - Plain paper
Paper Type - Letter (8.5 x 11 inches)
MicroWeave - Off
High Speed - On
Finest Detail - Off
Flip Horizontal - Off
Flip Vertical - Off
Invert Image - Off
Screen pattern - Off
Use the printer driver if you need to change the default settings.

Upgrading from the Stylus COLOR:
If you previously installed the Stylus COLOR driver for use on either the Modem or Printer port, you need to do one of the following: remove the ASFU Fixer from the Extensions folder in your System or turn off the ASFU Fixer with Extensions Manager (for System 7.5 users).
Bi-D Calibration Utility:
If vertical lines in your output are not straight or if the color alignment is distorted, use the Bi-D Calibration utility to align vertical lines in text and graphics. The Bi-D Calibration utility provides five adjustment patterns.
EPSON Monitor2:
If you restart or shut down the computer with spooled files under background printing, you may not be able to resume printing after restarting. To correct this problem, open the Extensions folder and select the EPSON folder to remove the spooled files from the Spool Folder.
If a memory error occurs during background printing, spooled data may be lost and the output will be corrupted. In this case, open the Extensions folder and select the EPSON folder to remove the spooled files from the Spool Folder. Then increase the memory size setting for EPSON Monitor2 using the Get Info feature in the File menu.
If only a portion of your image prints, you may need to increase the memory size setting for the Epson Monitor2 utility to 2MB or more using the Get Info feature in the File menu.
High Speed Mode:
For best results when printing at Super -720 dpi, it is recommended that you do not turn on High Speed Mode. (This mode is turned off when you select Super -720 dpi.)
Finest Detail:
This feature gives you sharper edges in text, solid graphics, and line art at Super -720 dpi. Unless you need extreme precision at 720 dpi, you should turn off this feature because it may slow down printing. Also, if only a portion of your image prints, you may need to switch it off. This feature increases the Macintosh memory requirements. If some patterns do not print correctly or if you experience memory problems, turn off this feature or increase your computer's memory.
Super -720 dpi printing:
In 720 dpi mode, the printer may output an extra page when printing a document that has an image spread across two pages or an image at the very bottom of a page.
Memory errors:
If a memory error message appears, you may need to increase the memory size setting for Application memory, EPSON Monitor2, or both using the Get Info feature in the File menu.
Virtual memory:
When Virtual memory is on, the driver may take a long time to spool. In this case, turn Virtual memory off.
Dithering B:
When Dithering B is selected, the pattern on the screen may not always match the pattern in the printout. To match the screen and output patterns, select Dithering A.
Custom Paper sizes:
The driver provides selectable paper widths from 3.94 to 12.94 inches. See your printer's reference guide for the maximum and minimum values you can specify here.
PowerBook series with PowerPC603e processor:
The Macintosh printer driver "StylusCOLOR" (Ver.1.00 - Ver.2.51) developed by Seiko Epson Corporation may not work properly with PowerBook series computers equipped with PowerPC603e processors and running System 7.5.2.
Application compatibility:
The following application compatibility problems have been noted:
- Microsoft Excel
When using the Macro "PRINT" command, don't set TRUE for the draft parameter.
Your printout may be incorrect if you change the "Finest Detail" setting from the Print dialog box. When you need to set Finest Detail, select it from the Page Setup dialog box.
- Microsoft PowerPoint
Solid areas of color in your printout may have a speckled appearance. This occurs when a color selected in your application software is too close to one of the printer's primary ink colors. To avoid this problem, select a pure color from you application software. For example when using Microsoft PowerPoint, select Format Slide Color Scheme, Change Color, More Colors. Change the Red, Green, and Blue percentages to represent a pure color. For example pure yellow is: Red = 65535, Green = 65535 Blue = 0. Selecting ColorSync 2.0 (Method ColorSync) from the print menu may also improve the quality of the output.
- Aldus SuperPaint
If a printer error occurs during "Black and White" printing with background printing turned off, your Macintosh does not display an error message. The "Cancel" function is ignored when background printing is turned off.
- Adobe Photoshop 2.0 and earlier
If your monitor is set to 32,000 colors, your document will be printed in black and white. In this case, use other available settings or update your software to version 2.5 or later.
- WordPerfect 3.0
If you set "Monochrome" for Inks and "No Halftoning" for Method, some graphics may not print. In this case, select "Dithering A" or "Error Diffusion" for Method.
- PixelPaint Pro 2.0
When printing in 720 dpi mode, memory errors may occur. In this case, use background printing. This problem cannot be solved by increasing the memory size setting for the application.
- SimpleText
To increase printing speed when printing a black-and-white only text document, select "B/W" from the Ink menu.
